I"m running my 3rd restaurant and have probably hired over 200 people these last several years. For the first time, I decided to run background checks on 10 candidates for waiters and some kitchen staff. 2 of them ended up having significant past criminal records.... Even though nothing is guaranteed...and you'll never know how an employee will work out until you hire her/him, I feel better that I've done the due-dillegence before making a hiring decision. ALSO, be sure to call 1-2 past employers....If you can get a hold of them..they usually will give you good insight re: a potential candidate.
I also have few rental properties, I think I'll start using Intelius for tenant screening and background checks.... hope this helps.
